Bringing Technology Into Agriculture

Farming is changing. We are exploring what comes next.

A good crop starts with a good plant. But successful farming involves much more — understanding the crop, the environment, the growing method and the decisions that need to be made along the way. That is where our approach begins.

DataTech Greens combines a technology-driven mindset with hands-on farming experience to explore exotic crops and modern agricultural techniques suited to Indian conditions. From avocado cultivation and nursery development to macadamia trials and farm consultancy, we are building our own practical understanding of what it takes to grow differently.

What we are building

Four ways we are exploring what modern, technology-informed farming can look like under Indian conditions.

Avocado Farm & Plant Nursery

Our avocado farm in Dharmaj is where we learn the crop from planting to fruiting under Indian conditions. Alongside it, we are developing a nursery to supply avocado plants, with the knowledge to grow them well.

Macadamia Farm & Plant Nursery

We have planted macadamia trial plants on our farm to test how they respond to local weather and growing conditions. If the results are promising, we plan to grow macadamia plants for other farmers.

Practical guidance for growers planning or managing a new crop, from choosing the site and plants to care through the seasons. Where required, we provide guidance at your farm.

Innovative Farming

We look beyond traditional methods. With experience and exposure to farming practices from Australia and other countries, we explore ideas that may be adapted to Indian agricultural conditions.

Why Avocado, Why Now

India's appetite for avocado is growing fast

Not long ago, avocado was an exotic fruit found in a few city cafés. Today it is in supermarkets and online grocery baskets across India, and nearly all of it is still shipped in from overseas.

40×rise in import value since FY 2018-19 (₹5.6 Cr → ₹229 Cr)3
4×consumption growth in smaller cities in a year (Bigbasket)2

Demand is spreading beyond the big metros, while Indian commercial growing is only just beginning. That gap is the opportunity for growers who start with the right plants and the right knowledge.

Growing avocado the right way

Avocado is a long-term orchard crop. The decisions made in the first year shape the decades that follow.

  • Soil

Deep, well-drained soil is essential. Avocado cannot tolerate waterlogging, so we plant on raised mounds where needed and check soil pH (ideally 5–7).

  • Water

Regular, measured irrigation (drip works well), never soggy roots. Water quality matters too, because avocado is sensitive to salinity.

  • The right plant for your region

Choose varieties and grafted plants that suit your climate, altitude and soil, rather than one variety for every farm.

  • Fertilisation

Nutrition planned from soil and leaf testing, adjusted as trees grow, not guesswork.

  • Pest & disease care

Regular monitoring and the right protection at the right time, with special care for root health.

  • Pruning & canopy

Shaping trees for light, airflow and easier harvesting, so the orchard stays productive and manageable.

Decades

A well-sited, well-managed avocado orchard can stay productive for up to 40 years.4 That is a long-term asset for your land.

How we approach farming

There is no single formula for every farm. So rather than simply following a fixed method, we focus on understanding the crop and its environment.

  1. 01

    Understand

Understand the crop, its requirements and the conditions in which it needs to grow.

  2. 02

    Establish

Create a suitable environment for the plant to establish and develop.

  3. 03

    Monitor

Keep a close eye on growth, development and changes throughout the cycle.

  4. 04

    Learn

Use real observations and farm experience to see what is working.

  5. 05

    Adapt

Adjust the approach based on the conditions and results we see on the farm.

  6. 06

    Share

Turn practical experience into useful knowledge for other growers.

A continuous cycle: what we learn and share shapes how we understand the next crop.

Because Better Decisions Start With Better Information

Technology has a role in modern farming

Technology is already changing the way industries work. We believe agriculture can benefit from the same mindset. Our background in IT encourages us to look at farming differently.

It's about making better-informed farming decisions.

From protected growing environments to modern cultivation methods and continuous monitoring, we explore where technology can add practical value to agriculture.

Avocado farming in India: frequently asked questions

Growing avocado

Can avocado be grown in Gujarat?

Yes, avocado can be grown in Gujarat with the right site, plants and care, but it is still a new crop for the state. We have been growing avocado on our own farm in Dharmaj, Anand District since 2022 to learn how it performs in local conditions. Success depends mainly on well-drained soil, good water quality, the right variety and careful management through the seasons.

Grafted plants of good varieties usually start fruiting in about 3 to 4 years. Trees grown from seed take longer, typically 5 to 6 years or more, and their fruit quality and yield are less consistent. This is why choosing grafted plants from a reliable nursery matters.

Source: FreshPlaza, Dec 2025, FAO / ICAR

Avocado needs deep, well-drained soil. The usual guideline is a pH of about 5 to 7, but our own avocado trees in Dharmaj grow in soil of around pH 7.5, so slightly alkaline soil can work with careful soil and nutrient management. Avocado cannot tolerate waterlogging, so trees are often planted on raised mounds, and it is sensitive to saline soil and water. Test your soil and irrigation water before planting, and use regular, measured drip irrigation.

Source: FAO / ICAR

The right variety depends on your region's climate, altitude and soil. Varieties grown in India include Hass and Hass selections such as Hass E and Hass N, Lamb Hass, Pinkerton and Ettinger, along with Indian varieties from ICAR-IIHR such as Arka Supreme and Arka Coorg Ravi. We recommend grafted plants of a variety suited to your location rather than one variety for every farm.

Source: FreshPlaza, Dec 2025

A well-sited, well-managed avocado orchard can stay productive for many years. Extension specialists put the useful life of an avocado orchard at about 15 to 40 years, depending on site conditions and care. That makes avocado a long-term investment in your land.

Source: UC Cooperative Extension

Yes, and it is growing fast. India imported avocados worth about ₹229 crore in FY 2024-25, roughly double the previous year, and nearly all avocados sold in India are still imported. Demand is also spreading from the big metros to smaller cities.

Start by testing your soil and irrigation water, and check that the site drains well. Then choose a variety suited to your region, buy grafted plants from a reliable nursery, and plan drip irrigation before planting. Getting guidance early helps you avoid costly mistakes in a crop that will be on your land for decades.
